Still plenty of Fourth to be had
By Michael J. Tittinger Daily Press Staff Writer
Not so fast. The holiday weekend’s only half over, and despite a grand old time being had at Santa Monica College’s Corsair Field on Saturday night, the kids are liable to be wanting more.
The Fourth of July is still held on the Fourth of July, no matter our own city’s events calendars.
So when the kids are clamoring, the spouse espousing, and even the doggie barking to get out and about tomorrow night, there’s still freedom to be rung elsewhere in the region. Drive to celebrate Independence Day within the community? This is still Southern California, after all.
With that in mind, here are some options for those of the mindset they still want to get their liberty on.
MARINA DEL REY
Marina del Rey will stage its annual fireworks extravaganza on Tuesday, choreographed to patriotic music being broadcast over FM radio KXLU, 88.9. The pyrotechnics will be on display over the main channel in the marina del Rey, beginning at 9 p.m.
Sponsored by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, the music will be blared over loudspeakers in Chace Park for those settling in to watch the sky.
Call 310-305-9545 for more information.
Get there in style, via a WaterBus, which will run from 11 a.m. until midnight on the Fourth. On-Call, pick-up service is available at six Marina del Rey WaterBus stops.
Call 310-628-3219.
PACIFIC PALISADES
In Pacific Palisades, patriotic participators can get an early start with the 8:15 a.m. 5K/10K Will Rogers Race, followed by the Youth Triathalon at 10 a.m.
Live music will begin filling the air at Palisades Charter High’s football stadium around 7 p.m., with the main attraction — the fireworks show — lighting up the sky at 9 p.m.
REDONDO BEACH
Hula Monsters will be on the prowl through much of Redondo Beach’s festivities, with the band playing three sets, beginning at 4 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., following the fireworks show at the end of the pier.
Free Parking is available at the Main Library Parking Garage, 303 PCH, and also at Redondo Union High School, just off the PCH at Vincent. There will be shuttle transportation, free of charge, from the high school to the pier between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Fireworks are set for 9 p.m.
SAN PEDRO
At Angels Gate Park in San Pedro, a vocalist will get things started at 10:30 a.m., singing patriotic songs. A flag-folding ceremony will also be performed, and the Korean Bell will be rung. Festivities continue throughout the day at Angels Gate, with ocean views at 3601 S. Gaffey St.
Cabrillo Beach, 3720 Stephen White Dr., also promises a daylong party, with food and live music, leading up to the Golden State Pops Orchestra on the beach, while the audience can watch a live fireworks show in the background. The performance begins at 8 p.m. and the fireworks show is slated for 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
