Beach blankie bingo
Dear Dorie,

I am wondering about beach safety for my toddlers this summer. Is there anything I can do to prepare for the beach days? I’ve looked into swim lessons, but that’s not really my concern as they’re going to play in the shallow waves all day anyway.

Dear Mama,

You are to be commended for taking toddlers to the beach, many parents just won’t deal with the sand and water until their children are school age. That said, there are a few tips for having fun in the sun. Start with major doses of sunscreen, and follow with carrying plenty of water and a few healthy snacks. If possible, bring a portable shade source like an umbrella or pop-up tent. This provides space for naps and cool down time.

Be emotionally prepared for sand — no matter what you do, it will end up everywhere.

As far as water safety, explain to your oldest toddler that he or she must always be able to see you. Then enforce the rule with a simple phrase that can be yelled loudly like, “too far.” You stay one-on-one with the youngest child and keep your eye on the toddler playing in the waves. If the distance between you feels unsafe, yell your code phrase. Toddlers have so much fun in the waves, they really want to experience the environment as long as possible. Getting full cooperation is pretty easy.

I also found that checking in with the lifeguard and sitting near the tower was a great source of comfort.
