My toddler is getting ready to start preschool in September. The school gave me a packet with suggestions for transitioning him to class, like visiting the classroom and reading books about preschool. Any other suggestions?

Dear Prepper,

Transitioning to preschool is a huge step in the life of your little one. Working with him to help navigate this step is important and appreciated by all — teachers, staff, fellow students and your son (you too when that first day drop-off goes well). There are many ideas to support a successful transition, here are my favorites:

- Continue with your school visits as long as it is interesting to your son. Make sure that he knows where the toilet and water fountain are as well as his classroom and cubby. You may need to explain the word “cubby” if it’s unfamiliar.

- Start off with a short first day. If the program offers an option to stay longer at drop-off and come early for pick-up, choose to do so on the first day. You’ll be surprised how happy your son is to see you after a short time in his new school environment.

- Have a positive “check-in” exchange with the teacher and other staff in full view of your child. Seeing your happiness and trust with the teacher will be very comforting to your son, especially on the first day.

- If at all possible, avoid any other major changes in the first few weeks of preschool. Allow him ample transition time to get used to the new rhythm and routine of the day.

Fundamentally, a successful preschool transition depends on empathy. If you respect and understand the volume of new sensations and experiences that your little one may be curious or even frightened about, your “mommy” nurturing instincts will kick in to support and guide him. Good luck.
