On Sunday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m., Santa Monica Police Officers responded to an apartment building in the 2100 block of 20th Street regarding a report of a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they spoke with witnesses who said a strange woman was seen opening a window to an apartment and climbed in. Officers closed off the area and waited for the suspect to emerge. A short time later, the woman opened the front door of the apartment and was detained by officers for questioning. During their investigation, officers found several items in her possession that did not belong to her, including checkbooks and personal identification.
When the suspect was placed under arrest for burglary, officers said she tried to fight back and was charged with resisting arrest. She was identified as Cynthia Simmons, 22, from Rialto. Her bail was set at $51,460. Officers said they had spoken with Simmons at the apartment complex earlier in the day. Officers said Simmons told them she was waiting for a friend who lived in the apartment to come home. She was escorted off the property then, but returned later in the day and made entrance via a window.
Speaking of windows, Simmons was cited for vandalism three days earlier after throwing a glass bottle against a window, causing it to shatter. The incident occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 1:45 p.m. Police said Simmons walked into the Public Safety Facility and became angry and frustrated after learning that her friend had been arrested. Police said Simmons threw a glass bottle against the service counter’s window and then left the lobby. She was detained outside and issued a citation for $500.
On Sunday, Oct. 15, at 6:45 p.m., officers responded to the corner of Main and Bay streets regarding a suspect who was passed out on a bus. When officers, arrived, they contacted the suspect, waking him up. Upon further investigation, officers discovered the man had several cell phones in his possession and a Sony PlayStation 2. Officers questioned the suspect, who could not provide any information as to how he came to possess the items, nor could he provide phone numbers for the phones. Officers discovered that the phones had been reported stolen and the suspect was arrested for possession of stolen property, a violation of his probation. The suspect was identified as John Bataeff, 35, of San Francisco. No bail was set.
On Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2:45 a.m., officers responded to the 700 block of Santa Monica Boulevard regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. The alleged victim and the suspect were both said to be homeless and had gotten into an altercation over sleeping arrangements on the sidewalk. The suspect allegedly picked up a piece of wood and struck the victim in the left tricep, just above the elbow. The victim fled and called police. When officers arrived, they located the suspect and placed him under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect had several outstanding warrants for misdemeanors. He was identified as Robert Lee Leonard, 52, a transient. His bail was set at $32,250.
On Friday, Oct. 13, at 8:45 p.m., officers responded to the 2400 block of Colorado Avenue — Café Bizou — regarding a report of a purse snatching. When officers arrived, they spoke with a woman who said she was having drinks at the bar when she struck up a conversation with a young man. After some time, she went to the restroom, leaving her purse behind. When she returned, she said her purse was missing, as was her newfound friend. Other witnesses in the bar said they knew the man from prior contacts and provided officers with his home address in Los Angeles. Officers went to that location and detained the suspect, who was arrested for grand theft. Inside the purse, officers found $1,500 in cash. The suspect was identified as Ulysses Villanueva, 23, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $20,000.
On Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m., officers on routine patrol noticed a man sitting on the sidewalk in the 300 block of Arizona Avenue. The man was using a laptop that was plugged into a lightpost, a violation of the municipal code (using electricity without permission). Upon further investigation, officers discovered that the computer did not belong to the suspect and he was arrested for possession of stolen property. He was identified as Larry Black, 49, a transient. His bail was set at $20,866.
On Friday, Oct. 13, at 8:05 p.m., officers responded to an alley in the 500 block of Colorado Avenue regarding an assault. When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim who said she had gotten into an argument with a friend over sleeping arrangements and the friend began to choke her. The victim identified the suspect and he was placed under arrest for assault. He was identified as Leon Marvin, 49, a transient. His bail was set at $30,000.
On Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 1:30 p.m., officers responded to an apartment building in the 500 block of Santa Monica Boulevard following a report of a burglary. When officers arrived, they spoke with two victims who said their vehicles had been burglarized while parked in an underground garage. The garage had a video surveillance system that captured the theft. The following morning, at 4:45 a.m., one of the victims went to check on his car when he found the suspect that was captured in the video sleeping in the garage. The victim detained the suspect and called police. The suspect was allegedly wearing clothing that had been stolen from the victim’s car the night before. The suspect was arrested and booked for burglary. He was identified as Cyrus Macswayne, 53, a transient from Santa Monica. No bail was set because of outstanding warrants and a parole violation.
On Monday, Oct. 9, at 11:40 p.m., officers responded to an alley in the 200 block of 26th Street. When officers arrived, they spoke with witnesses who pointed to a man who was on top of a garage yelling. The man allegedly said he was being chased. Officers managed to talk him down and during an investigation, he admitted to having taken methamphetamines within the last couple of days, police said. Officers determined the suspect was under the influence of narcotics and placed him under arrest. He was identified as Joel Robles, 23, of Los Angeles. No bail was issued because the suspect was on parole, having just been released from prison a few days prior to the incident.
