The need for speed results in smash and grab
Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 3:10 a.m.
Santa Monica police officers responded to the 2600 block of Main Street — ZJ Boarding House — regarding a report of two suspects seen throwing a metal pipe through the business’ front window and leaving with several skateboards. When officers arrived, they contacted a witness who gave them a description of the suspects. A short time later, officers located the suspects. The witnesses identified them as those who robbed the skateshop. The two suspects were arrested for burglary. Police said the suspects sold the skateboards to a drug dealer for $60, which they used to buy methamphetamine. The suspects were identified as Craig William Vandiepen, 32, a transient, and Jeffrey Edward Horvath, 35, a transient. Vandiepen’s bail was set at $20,000. Horvath’s bail was set at $30,649. Horvath was also charged with possession of a glass pipe used to smoke rock cocaine, police said.

Tuesday, Nov. 7, at midnight
Officers responded to the 2900 block of Main Street regarding a report of a man who had kicked over a cement trash can, which shattered into several pieces. When officers arrived, they spoke with a witness who identified the suspect. Officers located the suspect a short time later walking down the street. He was taken into custody and booked for vandalism. He was identified as Nicolas Dante Aydelotte, 32, a transient. His bail was set at $20,500.

Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10:15 p.m.
Officers responded to the 500 block of Wilshire Boulevard — Renee’s — regarding a suspect who had ordered $42 worth of food and drinks, but did not have the money to pay for it. When officers arrived, they spoke with an employee at the restaurant, who said the suspect tried to use a credit card, but it was declined. The suspect said he did not have any other means of paying the bill, police said. He was arrested for defrauding an in-keeper. The suspect was identified as David Bina, 28, of Marina del Rey. His bail was set at $500.

Sunday, Nov. 12, at 12:30 a.m.
Officers responded to the 1300 block of Franklin Avenue regarding a report of a man urinating in public. When officers arrived, they spoke with witnesses who said a man was seen urinating in the bushes of a private residence. The owner confronted the man, who punched the owner in the face. A struggle ensued and witnesses were able to break up the fight. The suspect then ran to a nearby nightclub — Busby’s — where he was detained by security. Officers took the suspect into custody and he was booked for assault and battery. He was identified as Erik Klein 27, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $20,000.

Monday, Nov. 6, at 11:40 a.m.
Officers responded to Santa Monica College regarding a suspect who was in custody for stealing a cell phone. When officers arrived, they spoke with police from SMC who said the suspect had been spotted by witnesses using the cell phone that had been stolen on Oct. 17. SMC police detained the suspect, who was positively identified by the victim. Officers said the cell phone was linked to the victim. The suspect was arrested for grand theft. He was identified as Victor Clay Elliott, 18, from Long Beach. His bail was set at $25,000.

Sunday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m.
Officers responded to the 2200 block of Lincoln Boulevard regarding a report of an assault. When the officers arrived, they made contact with the victim, who said he was in a nearby alley when two men began to kick and punch him, knocking him out. When the victim awoke about an hour later, he said that he walked over to a spot where the suspects are known to hang out, and when he saw them, he notified police. Officers detained the suspects, who had blood on them. The men were arrested for assault with a deadly weapon for using their boots to kick the victim in the head. They were identified as Nicholas McGarrity, 32, a transient, and John Vasaitis, 47, a transient. Their bail was set at $30,000 each. The victim was treated at a local hospital. The extent of his injuries were not known at the time the crime report was taken, police said.

Friday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m.
Officers responded to the 300 block of Colorado Avenue — Macy’s — regarding a shoplifting suspect in custody. When officers arrived, they spoke with security guards at the department store who said they observed the suspect walk into the Macy’s with a large plastic bag from the store. The suspect then proceeded to grab clothes off the racks, walk into a dressing room and exit with the clothes in the bag. Security guards said the suspect did this twice before exiting the store, failing to pay for the items. Once outside the store, security guards confronted the suspect and took him into custody. Aside from the merchandise, officers said the suspect had a utility knife, which he used to remove the security tags. The suspect was taken into custody and booked for burglary. He was identified as Iman Kesheh, 19, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $20,000. Police said $481 worth of clothing was recovered.
