Hollywood’s Christmas Parade marks 75 years of strutting

By Daily Press staff

It may not be as big as New York’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but Hollywood has held its own for 75 years.

In a special celebration of the Hollywood Christmas Parade’s landmark 75th anniversary, broadcasting icon Regis Philbin has been named the Diamond Jubilee Honorary Grand Marshal for this Sunday’s event, the first time such an honorary position has been added to the parade lineup.

George Lopez will serve as Grand Marshal. The heart and soul of the parade festivities, Lopez will join a grand tradition of entertainers such as Jimmy Stewart, Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Hope, Ron Howard and Arnold Schwarzenegger — all of whom have served in the parade’s starring role.

“The parade is a celebration of Hollywood and the community. George Lopez is not only an incredibly gifted entertainer, but is deeply committed to his work with charitable organizations to better the communities of his native Los Angeles,” said Leron Gubler, President and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “He was a natural choice for Grand Marshal and we are thrilled to welcome him.”

On Sunday, Nov. 26, the parade route will begin in front of the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater and continue along a 2.3-mile route that includes Hollywood Boulevard, Vine Street and Sunset Boulevard, ending in front of Hollywood High School. The parade attracts an estimated 500,000 people and features a cavalcade of celebrities from movies, music and television, exotic cars, star-studded floats, marching bands and musical performances.

Topping the performance list this year are teen pop artist Brooke Hogan — daughter of wrestler “Hulk” Hogan — and singer Michael Bolton. Other celebrity appearances include Shawn and Marlon Wayans and the cast of “High School Musical.”

“Hollywood is the hottest spot in Los Angeles, its thriving nightlife drawing young talent and celebrities,” said Gubler. “The parade, an integral part of the fabric of the community, is enjoying this renewed enthusiasm ... of the legendary Hollywood Christmas Parade.

“Young Hollywood is rekindling the excitement and glamour of the town in its heyday.”

Ford’s photography opens new art gallery

Former actor Terence Ford, who was in “every soap opera ever shot in LA,” and then became a Hollywood refugee in the Napa Valley “because acting is not something grownups should do,” will exhibit his newest photographs — “1/8 of a sec. Slow Speed in the Fast Lane” — at the opening of the Deborah Page Gallery in Santa Monica.

Ford, an acclaimed commercial and fine art photographer who has carried a camera since studying at the London Film School in 1969, has shot everything from annual reports to Playboy layouts. He was assistant director on “Blade Runner” and worked for more than a decade as an actor, often playing a divorce attorney, to his dismay.

Deborah Page Schneider is an art consultant and curator of the artwork for CordeValle Resort, the Calistoga Ranch and many private collections, including those of Rene di Rosa and Danielle Steel. She created the acclaimed sculpture garden at the Auberge du Soleil Resort in Napa Valley with partner Susan Brandt, and she likes to discover and promote emerging artists.

The Deborah Page Gallery is located at 1028 Montana Avenue.
