Santa Monica police officers patrolling the 1800 block of Wilshire Boulevard observed a man walking down the street tearing up newspapers and throwing them at the doorsteps of nearby businesses. Officers approached the suspect and asked him to pick up the pieces of paper. He refused, police said, and was arrested for littering. The suspect was identified as Michael Burkett, 32, a transient. His bail was set at $100.
Sunday, Dec. 31, at 9:50 p.m.
Officers responded to the 2600 block of Lincoln Boulevard — Albertsons — after receiving a call about a fight in a parking lot. When officers arrived, they spoke with employees at the grocery store, who said they had been fighting with a man who stole a $20 bottle of liquor. Employees said the man had walked into the store, grabbed the booze and walked out without paying for the bottle. When employees tried to confront him, he began to throw punches and fled. Police located the suspect a few blocks away in the 2300 block of Lincoln Boulevard, where he was detained and arrested for robbery. He was identified as Angel Justice Perez, 33, a transient. No bail was set because he was on probation or parole, police said.
Saturday, Dec. 30
Police responded to the 300 block of Colorado Avenue — Macy’s — regarding a shoplifting suspect in custody. When officers arrived, they spoke with store security who said a woman walked into the department store and took several items off the clothing racks and took them into a dressing room, where she removed the security censors with a pair of scissors she has hidden in her purse. After several minutes, the woman left the store without paying for any items, police said. Once outside the store, she was detained by security and held until police arrived. She was arrested for burglary. The woman was identified as Bella Victoria Amoa, 30. She refused to give her address, police said. Her bail was set at $20,000. The clothing, cosmetics and kitchen ware — valued at $1,043 — was recovered.
Friday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m.
An undercover police officer with the vice unit conducted a sting operation in the 2600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard — Mimiko Massage — after receiving reports that the establishment was a house of prostitution. The officer entered the parlor and requested a massage. He was taken to a back room, where a masseuse asked the officer if he wanted additional sexual service in exchange for money. At that point, the masseuse was arrested and booked for prostitution. She was identified as Yong Chu Yi, 55, of Los Angeles. Her bail was set at $2,000.
Friday, Dec. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Officers responded to the 1200 block of the Third Street Promenade — the Apple store — regarding a report that two men had entered the store and allegedly tried to use a fraudulent credit card to purchase items at the store. The two left the store before the purchases were made and proceeded to walk to other establishments in the area, police said. When officers arrived, they made contact with store employees, who identified the suspects. Officers approached and questioned the two men. Four credit cards were found on their possession. None were registered to the two men, police said. One suspect said the credit cards were given to him by a friend. The two were arrested for fraud. One suspect was identified as Christian Mata, 35, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $50,000. The second suspect was identified as Ernie Pacheco, 31. No bail information or place of residence was available for Pacheco, police said.
On Thursday, Dec. 28, at 7:10 p.m.
Officers responded to the 300 block of Colorado Avenue — Macy’s — regarding a shoplifting suspect in custody. When officers arrived, they spoke with store security who said a man walked into the store with three Macy’s bags and pulled several items of clothing off of the racks arbitrarily and then went into a dressing room, where he exited a few minutes later without any items. He did this several times and then walked out of the department store with three bags full of clothing. Once outside the store, store security made contact with the man and detained him until police arrived. The man was arrested for grand theft. He was identified as Gerardo Osorio, 24, of Mar Vista. His bail was set at $25,624 because of outstanding warrants. The clothing, valued at $1,000, was recovered.
On Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 12:05 a.m.
Officers responded to the 200 block of Colorado Avenue after receiving a call from a Big Blue Bus driver about a woman who was struggling with another woman near the Santa Monica Place mall. When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim, who said she was walking down the street with shopping bags in her hand and a suitcase when a woman approached her and tried to snatch one of her bags. A struggle ensued and the suspect managed to snatch one of the bags and flee. The victim was able to flag down a bus driver, who called police. Armed with a description of the suspect, officers located her a short time later in front of City Hall. She was arrested for strong-arm robbery. She was identified as Beth Hoffman, 40, a transient. Her bail was set at $50,000.
