Monday, Jan. 8, at 12:25 a.m.
A man with cuts on his face made contact with Santa Monica Police officers patrolling the Santa Monica Pier, and told them that he had just been attacked while walking along the beach near lifeguard tower 12. The victim said he was approached by a man who appeared to be drunk. The man asked him, “What are you looking at?” The victim ignored the question and continued to walk. That’s when he was suddenly struck in the face several times with a beer bottle, police said. The suspect fled after the attack. The victim walked to the pier and gave officers a description of the suspect, who was detained a short time later at the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Ocean Avenue. He was placed under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect was identified as Hector Hernandez Gonzales, 22, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $30,000. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for contusions and lacerations to the face. He received multiple stitches to close his wounds, police said.
Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 6:15 p.m.
Police officers responded to the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk regarding a bike theft. When officers arrived, they spoke to a man who said he was riding his bicycle on the bike path when he saw a man riding one of his bikes, which had been stolen a few days earlier. The victim was able to identify the bicycle because it had markings on it that only he would know, police said. Officers contacted the suspect who gave conflicting stories about how he received the bike and for how long he had it in his possession. The suspect was placed under arrest for possession of stolen property and the bike was returned to the victim. The suspect was identified as Dale Russell, 41, a transient. His bail was set at $1,750. He also had outstanding warrants, police said.
Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 8:40 p.m.
Officers responded to an apartment building in the 1500 block of Princeton Street regarding a fight in progress. When officers arrived, they made contact with a married couple who had been involved in an argument that escalated into a physical altercation, police said. The husband allegedly hit his wife and based on an investigation was arrested for domestic violence and assault and battery. He was identified as Juan Jose Rodriguez, 57, of Santa Monica. His bail was set at $10,000. He was also charged with making criminal threats, saying he was going to kill his wife, police said.
Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 11:15 p.m.
Officers responded to the 2200 block of Ocean Avenue regarding a man who was removing items out of the back of a pickup truck. When officers arrived, they saw the man wrapping items from the truck in a black blanket. They took the man into custody. An investigation revealed the man had pried open the back of the truck and removed a bag containing CDs, as well as some swimming equipment, police said. All of the items were recovered and the man was arrested for auto burglary. He was identified as Jose Fernando Villasana, 31, a transient. His bail was set at $20,000.
Saturday, Jan. 13, at 1:30 a.m.
Officers responded to the 2900 block of Main Street — Circle Bar — to assist Los Angeles Police Department officers who were investigating a report of an assault. When SMPD officers arrived, they spoke with witnesses at the scene who said that the victim had been hit with a beer bottle in the face after having exchanged words with another man at the bar. Witnesses said that earlier in the evening, the two had exchanged words after the suspect was staring the victim down as he was dancing with two females. As the suspect was leaving the bar, he turned to the victim and smashed a beer bottle on the side of his face, police said. The victim, who suffered minor cuts to his left ear, followed the suspect outside of the bar and flagged down LAPD officers who were driving by. The suspect was arrested and booked for assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect was identified as Gary Steven McJimsey, 27, of Lakewood. His bail was set at $30,000.
Thursday, Jan. 11, at 11 p.m.
Officers responded to the 2800 block of Third Street regarding a report of an assault in progress. When officers arrived, they made contact with a woman who said her boyfriend was beating her and threatened to kill her. An argument broke out between the two and the woman said she locked herself in her bedroom. Her boyfriend kicked the door open and began hitting her, she said. She eventually was able to call police. The boyfriend was arrested and charged with assault and battery, domestic violence and attempted murder. He was identified as Robert Richard Rush, 29, of Santa Monica. His bail was set at $500,000.
Sunday, Jan. 14, at 2:15 p.m.
Officers responded to the 1550 beach parking lot regarding a robbery in progress. When officers arrived, they spoke to several witnesses who said a man carrying a heavy chain with a lock attached to one end walked up to two men who were lying down in the parking lot and began to strike one of the men with the chain, causing the victim to bleed profusely from head. The other man lying on the ground seemed to be passed out, police said. The man with the chain tried to take money from the man’s jacket, but was unsuccessful. He then fled. Armed with a description of the suspect, officers arrested the man with the chain a short time later. He was booked for assault with a deadly weapon for attacking the one man. He was also booked for attempted robbery. The suspect was identified as Derrick Patrick Sites, 35, a transient. His bail was set at $800,000.
