Elderly man plows through California farmers’ market

FULLERTON In an eerie reminder of what took place in Santa Monica four years ago, a 79-year-old man drove into a busy farmers’ market here on Thursday, striking an awning after dozens of shoppers managed to jump out of his way.
There were no reported injuries after Wade Houston reportedly drove past a temporary street barricade and struck an awning, a van and light pole before coming to a stop, FOX 11 News reported.
While similar in some aspects, the outcome was far different than what befelled Santa Monica in July 2003, when an 86-year-old George Russell Weller plowed through the Downtown Santa Monica Farmers’ Market, killing 10 people and injuring 63 others.
Houston was traveling on Pomona Avenue around 4 p.m. when he drove through a stop sign and entered the farmers’ market from the 100 block of East Wilshire Avenue. Police estimate that he was traveling at speeds of 40 to 50 mph in his 2005 Dodge Caravan, according to FOX 11 News.
The driver, who didn’t display any signs of injuries, was taken to the hospital.
