Pane in the glass: Suspect wanted a fix
Monday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. Santa Monica police officers responded to the 2100 block of Virginia Avenue regarding a disturbance. When officers arrived, they spoke with the victims, who said they were threatened by a man who wanted them to pay for a broken window at his mother’s house. Apparently, the victims’ son had broken the suspect’s mother’s window and had agreed to pay for it. The suspect did not believe them and began to threaten the victims, police said. When the victims tried to close their apartment door on the suspect, he allegedly forced his way into their apartment and threatened to kill them. When the suspect saw the victims calling the police, he ran. He was picked up a short time later and arrested for making criminal threats. He was identified as Erick Lamar McKinney, 35, a Santa Monica resident. No bail was set because of a probation violation, police said.
Sunday, Jan. 14, at 10 p.m. Officers responded to the 2300 block of Broadway regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim, a transient, who said he was getting ready for bed when an acquaintance approached him and the two began to argue. The suspect allegedly picked up a four-foot metal pole and tried to strike the victim with it. Unsuccessful, the suspect fled on foot and was picked up by police a short time later in the 1400 block of 23rd Street. The suspect was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He was identified as Timothy Gethseman Butler, 48, a transient. His bail was set at $95,000 because of outstanding warrants.
Monday, Jan. 15, at 2:45 Officers in the 1700 block of 20th Street noticed a vehicle that was missing its front license plate. Officers conducted a traffic stop and, during their investigation, noticed that the driver was in possession of drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine, police said. The driver was arrested for drug possession. He was identified as David Ernest Smith, 36, of Hollywood. His bail was set at $10,000.
Sunday, Jan. 21, at 4 a.m. Officers walking in the 1400 block of the Third Street Promenade saw a man sitting on a bench looking suspicious. When officers approached the man, they said they noticed him trying to hide something in his hand. During a conversation with the suspect, officers said something dropped from his hand. Officers recovered the item, which was a baggy filled with what was later determined to be methamphetamine. The suspect, who was on probation, was arrested for drug possession. He was identified as John Milton Rainer, 32, a transient. No bail was set because of a probation violation, police said.
Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 5:15 a.m. Officers on routine patrol in the 1900 block of Pico Boulevard observed two men at a gas station using a blowtorch on a machine used to dispense air and water for cars. Officers sat back and watched the men use the blow torch in what looked like an attempt to open up the machine and take change from inside. When the men saw officers watching them, police said they gathered up the blowtorch and drove away from the area. Officers pulled them over a short time later and discovered the suspects were in possession of a crowbar, vice grips and $97.18 in coins collected in a small cloth bag. The driver was arrested for grand theft. He was identified as Ronald Alvarez, 30, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $300,000. A passenger, Richard Paul Elias, 26, of Los Angeles, was also arrested. Information on Elias’ bail was not available, police said.
Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 1:25 a.m. Officers conducting a traffic stop at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Temescal Canyon arrested the driver for possession of cocaine. The driver was speeding, police said, which prompted the traffic stop. The driver was identified as Michael Christopher Matousek, 39, from Malibu. His bail was set at $10,000.
