It will grow heavier by the hour, but without it he couldn’t survive the long lonely trek that lies ahead. He’s ready. Ready to leave behind all he knows to risk wicked border vigilantes, foreign jail, endless walking through all manner of deadly terrain in scorching weather. He is so very ready.

Human dignity might be as good a place as any to start this thing. Not a half-bad place to start anything, do you think? As difficult a concept as it appears to be for some to grasp, we all know. We’re born with it, just as surely as we’re born with a heart in our chest.
