As the third “anniversary” of the Iraq War was observed on March 20, President George W. Bush briefly addressed the nation and reminded us all, “Ours is an amazing nation where thousands have volunteered to serve our country. They volunteered … knowing full well that their time in the military could put them in harm’s way.” This take on true “March Madness” appeared in the SMDP, March 20, 2003

Desperate for a better life, a decent wage for a decent day’s labor, for a decent country governed by men unsullied by greed and corruption, he packs his bag with the bare necessities, goes to the corner cantina for one last belt of tequila and a couple gallons of drinking water. It will grow heavier by the hour, but without it he couldn’t survive the long lonely trek that lies ahead. He’s ready. Ready to leave behind all he knows to risk wicked border vigilantes, foreign jail, endless walking through all manner of deadly terrain in scorching weather. He is so very ready.

Human dignity might be as good a place as any to start this thing. Not a half-bad place to start anything, do you think? As difficult a concept as it appears to be for some to grasp, we all know. We’re born with it, just as surely as we’re born with a heart in our chest.
America showed off a lot of both on the first Tuesday after the first Monday, when we (pardon the indignity) threw the bums the hell out.
