By Hamp Simmons | Published 01/26/2007 | Art | Unrated
January wraps up in Santa Monica with two of the biggest art shows in the nation — the 12th Annual Los Angeles Art Show and Art LA. Visual art lovers from around the world will be converging on our hometown this weekend to look at and buy works that include contemporary and modern art, as well as historic works from the old masters. You’ll also find new theatre openings and a retrospective of classic Japanese cinema.

On this third weekend in January, Santa Monica’s cultural scene continues its build to a spectacular crescendo. We’ve got a few old friends back in town, Photo LA at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, local artist Daniel Alonzo goes back to high school and “Pericles” returns to the Miles Playhouse, as do the Los Angeles Chamber Players.

With the holidays finally finished, it’s time to start off a whole new year of exciting art and cultural happenings in Santa Monica. And if this month is anything like what the rest of the year will bring us, it’s going to be a great one. January starts off with a Santa Monica Museum of Art opening that will take you on an art trek to Tijuana; the 18th Street Arts Center will serve up a hot dish of Brazilian samba; Highways, the Santa Monica Symphony and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Westside Coalition remind us of the importance of the American Civil Rights Movement; local teens give us a look at their world at the Santa Monica Library and the galleries at Bergamot Station debut their new winter exhibitions.

18th Street — In the wake of the rush and chaos of the holidays, a calm, relaxing night of art and culture is what the 18th Street Arts Center has planned for this Saturday. The “ArtNight at 18th Street” event is a free festival held four times a year featuring group art shows, music, food and drinks.

Most people look at Santa Monica and see a quiet, gentle seaside community, but not this week. This edition of the Palette rips open the curtains to reveal the Santa Monica you never knew. And lies beneath that calm exterior? Art! We’ll show you what happens when an arrogant fairy queen gets a taste of her own medicine and while other publications dig through celebrity dirty laundry, we’ve got Robert Rauschenberg’s clean shirts. And for the more daring readers, you can explore the underside of our city up close and personal at the Santa Monica Scramble Scavenger Hunt.

In this magical time of the year, Santa Monica offers you the delightful fantasies of The Magic Flute, seductive tones of Sibelius, surreal adventures in forestry and theatrical minuets. We’ve got gallery exhibitions featuring many of Southern California’s most emblematic artists, and even if you’re just out shopping, there’s art to be found in the most commercial (and chic) environs.

I hope everyone had a terrific Turkey or Tofu Day! As we all know, the three days after Thanksgiving are the busiest shopping days of the entire year. You probably don’t want to, but inevitably, someone is going to drag you shopping with them this weekend. But don’t despair! If you can manage to keep them in Santa Monica, there are quite a few quiet respites available to calm your nerves and help you refrain from strangling that person at the cash register who has just had two credit cards declined and is searching for a third while loudly discussing intimate family secrets with their Aunt Agnes on a cell phone.

It’s almost Thanksgiving, which means the Christmas and Chanukah decorations have been up for the past two months, but if you’re like me, you’ve still got lots of shopping to do.  I’ve got a great idea for this year, though. Instead of giving people holiday presents, I’ll just jot them a little note telling them that, given the fact that the arts are always in serious need of funding, and they’re doing just fine, I decided to support the arts this year and attended a play or a concert or gallery exhibition in their honor. Do you think that’ll work?

I’ll bet Clive Barker never expected to see his name in a headline right next to Dancing Penguins, but this is Santa Monica and the unexpected is only to be expected. Last weekend was an arts and culture marathon and I’m still tired, but as you see, there’s more on the horizon. Janis Ian is coming to town. The Virginia Avenue Project kids are doing improv. Laraine Newman and Melanie Chartoff are revealing secrets. And tap dancing penguins.

It’s the weekend before Halloween. Witches and ghouls everywhere are busy crafting frightening costumes, erecting horrifying haunted houses, robbing fresh graves and stopping by Trader Joe’s for that great deal they’ve got on eye of newt. Around Santa Monica, along with jack-o-lanterns and spider webs, you’ll be seeing altars laden with gifts of sweets and other food and graves decorated with marigolds in preparation for Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 — los Dias de los Muertos (“the Days of the Dead”). In the meantime, we’ve got plenty of things to keep you entertained, stimulated, provoked and occupied while the spirits prepare for their big day.

Didn’t it feel good to get out of the house last weekend? I don’t know about you, but between the Pico Art Walk, all those openings at Bergamot and the shopping I did at Gracie, I think I walked about 20 miles. Maybe I burnt enough calories that I can eat some Halloween candy next weekend.

It’s the weekend, but what to do? There’s contemporary dance with a generous dose of physical science at the Miles Playhouse. Or there’s paper-making at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, where you can also start your holiday shopping in the new Gracie gift store. Bergamot Station has so many outstanding exhibitions up right now that you could easily overdose on visual art while you’re there. And if you’re musically inclined and under 18, you can join the new youth orchestra. Or you could just stay at home and watch TV.  But you don’t want to stay at home and watch TV, do you? Face it, it’s 467 channels and nothing to watch. I’d suggest dance ... and Bergamot ... and shopping at Gracie ... and ...

It’s a good weekend to live in Santa Monica — not that there’s ever a bad weekend to live in Santa Monica — but this one is definitely above average. Why? That’s simple, in only three short days, we’ve got smart and sophisticated British comedy, insightful yet raucous forays into the life of a thoroughly modern Latina, youth dance workshops that will stretch the boundaries of space and time, wondrous paintings, free classical music and the absolute best, most effective Saturday morning alarm clock on the planet.

Trust me, you won’t want to sleep through this weekend.
