Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Santa Monica were recently deployed to disaster-stricken Ventura County to provide mental-health services to victims of the La Conchita mudslides.

Dr. Robin May and Dr. Redette Gelish assessed the ways in which survivors have been coping with the aftermath of the disaster and monitored the Red Cross relief workers at the site to make sure they had support during the recovery process.

Seven more Red Cross of Santa Monica volunteers were asked to join the Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles to manage a shelter set up for residents of Santa Clarita.

The volunteers of the Red Cross of Santa Monica come from diverse backgrounds and professions. Among the Santa Monica volunteers helping in Santa Clarita are a paralegal, a screenwriter and a vice president of finance. To learn more about volunteering, call (310) 394-3773.

Over this past weekend, the Santa Monica Red Cross also raised money for those striken by the tsunami in Southeast Asia during a jam session in Los Angeles.

Jack Black, of “School of Rock,” and friends organized a concert to benefit the “Music for Relief Initiative,” founded by the band members of the Southern California rock group Linkin Park.

Monday night’s sold-out concert at the Wiltern Theatre featured performances by Beck, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, with comic relief from Will Ferrell and Chris Rock.

By the end of the concert, Red Cross volunteers had processed close to $3,000 in donations from fans wishing to support Music for Relief. Close to $1 million has been raised through the initiative so far.

Monday night’s benefit grossed approximately $130,000, and the remaining $95,000 in proceeds was a result of merchandise sales at the concert and gifts from Universal, MGM, and Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg.
