’Tween girls get to learn about growing up. How does the moon affect your life as a girl and woman? What are some of the emotional and physical changes that occur as you grow? How do magazine ads and commercials influence you? Girls aged 11 to 13 can explore these and other questions at a three-part workshop, entitled “Moon Magic: Growing Up and Loving It.”

Lack of information increases the likelihood that girls will feel embarrassed or out of control during puberty. The goals of this workshop series are to give age-appropriate information about the positive aspects of being female, to help girls examine the interplay between individual needs and cultural values, and to offer a rite of passage to promote female pride and power. Activities led by Kesa Kivel include discussions, interactive activities, butterfly art project, videos and a red jellybean party.

The workshop series, part of the YWCA Santa Monica/Westside’s Girls in Action program, will be held at the YWCA Santa Monica/Westside, 2019 14th St. on Wednesdays, Feb. 23, March 2 and March 9 from 3:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Admission is free. Registration is required and space is limited. Call the YWCA at (310) 452-3881 to register.
