Now appearing at Loyola Marymount University’s Laband Art Gallery is the debut exhibition “Not for Profit: Designing across the Social Divide.”

The exhibition features work from graphic designers from the United States and Europe. The images critique the global economy, economic disparities and con-sumerism.

The graphic designers represented in the exhibition were originally schooled in the concepts and techniques of commercial design to serve corporate clientele and multinational business interests. Now they are using their skills to produce critical images and ideas about social and economic justice. Some are also putting their skills in the service of the nonprofit and cultural sector.

Participants in Not for Profit include: Designers Without Borders, whose work has supported educational projects in Uganda; Daniela Marx, who collaborates with video artists and musicians in New Orleans; Thomas Starr, founder of The Cultural Construction Co. and member of Boston’s design collective Class Action; and locally, Los Angeles political satirist Robbie Conal and selections from the Center for the Study of Political Graphics.

“Unfortunately, a majority of graphic designers have been absorbed into the national and global corporate culture,” said Garland Kirkpatrick, assistant professor of design within the department of art and art history at LMU, and who designs for nonprofit and cultural clientele.

The exhibit is running from now until April 17\. The Laband Gallery is located at 1 LMU Drive, in the Westchester district of Los Angeles. The Laband Art Gallery is open Wednesday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The gallery is closed Monday and Tuesday. Group tours available by appointment. For general information, call (310) 338-7708\. There’s a moose with a cold at 826LA
