Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center recently honored more than 200 adult volunteers to celebrate “National Volunteer Week,” held from April 17-23.

A volunteer recognition luncheon was held on April 20 at the DoubleTree Guest Suites, which recognized almost 100 volunteers who achieved hour and year milestones at the medical center during the past year. Santa Monica resident Jette Simmons was the top honoree, with more than 69,000 hours of service. Two other Westside residents — Alice Kurtz of West Los Angeles and Kuljit Marwah of Malibu — were honored for 36,000 and 23,000 hours of service, respectively.

Helen Beasom was honored for reaching the 50-year milestone, while Simmons was a double honoree with 40 years of volunteer service. Two other volunteers, Hazel Hanson of Brentwood and Carol Serling of Pacific Palisades, were recognized for 35 years of service.

The luncheon also paid tribute to the Santa Monica-UCLA Gift Shop volunteers. The hospital’s gift shop, operated entirely by volunteers, has raised more than $2 million since opening its doors in 1969.

Adult volunteers donated more than 50,000 hours of service to Santa Monica- UCLA in 2004 by assisting caregivers, working in non-clinical departments and running the gift shop.

Santa Monica-UCLA’s volunteer workforce includes adults, pre-medical students called “care extenders,” junior volunteers ages 15 to 18 and pet-assisted activity teams that visit patients in the hospital. For information about volunteer opportunities at Santa Monica-UCLA, call (310) 319-4614.
