The Big Blue Bus is enjoying increased rid-ership thanks to the success of two community routes — the Sunset Ride, which is the fourth most popular, and the Crosstown Ride.

The bus agency recently entered into an agreement with Santa Monica College to institute a new increased fee structure allowing students to ride any bus line any time.

Stephanie Negriff, the director of the transit agency, said that an analysis was recently completed on the ridership on all bus lines, complementing the physical automated counters that exist on some of the buses. Negriff said some of the counters have been inaccurate.

“During our morning and evening peak hours, our buses are standing loads only all the time except three hours a day when we don’t have exceeding loads on the busiest line,” Negriff said.

The bus agency is also looking to develop a rapid service from Pico to the Rimpau Station in Los Angeles, allowing Santa Monica riders to better connect with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority system in Los Angeles County.

Big Blue Bus officials have a meeting with MTA staff next week during which they will make a formal presentation.

“We think it’s a great idea,” Negriff said.
