*By Henry Rosenfeld Ocean Park*

I was struck dumb the other day passing by a construction sign that said, “RAMP CLOSED 5/19 - 5/26,” still glowing brightly, huge and electric along a western stretch of Ocean Park Boulevard.

Why, I wondered, is Santa Monica wasting so much electricity? Last I checked it was the first week of June.

Oh well, I mused — slowing to 25 mph because I read this stretch of Ocean Park Boulevard was a speed-trap — I guess it aint easy bein’ green.

But how about awake? Or smart; I cringe to imagine tourists driving east at the end of the day thinking we’re all a bunch of Rip Van Winkles asleep at the beach.
