The cars generally get about five to 10 miles per gallon more than their counterparts without sacrificing performance, said Sean Sullivan, the general manager of Lexus Santa Monica.

The dealership currently has a waiting list for the hybrids.

“I think, for the most part, people want to be environmentally conscious,” Sullivan said on Friday.

Having arrived from across the pond — Salisbury, England — Ian and Julie McEntee were surprised by the number of recycling bins they spotted in San Francisco and Las Vegas. They haven’t seen as many in Santa Monica, according to Ian McEntee.

The McEntee family are wrapping up a two-week trip to San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles today.

As a family, they tend to recycle about 60 percent of the products they consume.

Recycling is big in England, mainly because it’s an island and the residents are trying to conserve resources, Ian McEntee said.

Hybrid vehicles aren’t as popular in “jolly old” England, where the government is considering placing a higher tax on gas-guzzling vehicles to promote their use, said McEntee, who along with his wife is a scientist.

“I’ve seen quite a few Priuses, but 10 times as many Hummers,” McEntee said on Friday, regarding Los Angeles. “There are people that say they’re very green, but drive a big car.”
