Join the Santa Monica community in indulging in music and lounging outside.

The Acoustic Jazz Quartet, with vocalist Cheryl Conley, will perform this Sunday, Aug. 20 at the second “Jazz on the Lawn” event.

Jazz on the Lawn is a free concert series on Sundays at City Hall. Bring a picnic blanket, a chair or just relax in the grass while listening to the hot music with the cool ocean breeze.

A working ensemble since 1996, the Acoustic Jazz Quartet approaches the traditional quartet format from a new perspective, creating a unique ensemble sound.Inspired by the stylings of Ella Fitzgerald, who told her to practice everyday,Conley has worked hard to become the artist she is today.

While the band plays on the north lawn, local artist Marcus Kuiland Nazario will lead concert-goers in games of croquet and horseshoes on the south lawn.

On Sunday, Aug. 27, the Mad Alsacians will perform jazz classics with a French flair. This sophisticated but lively trio combines the musical tones of a guitar, an acoustic bass and an accordion to perform a soulful repertoire that includes timeless selections from the “Hot Club” era of Paris. Director Jean-Paul Monsché moved to Paris as 19-year-old to further his musical development, study jazz and support himself with his piano playing. He collaborated with various artists, local cabaret singers, as well as, jazz, blues and rock groups which allowed him to develop an eclectic approach and wide stylistic competence.

Jazz on the Lawn is funded by the city of Santa Monica cultural affairs division with support from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Recording Industries Music Performance Fund.

City Hall is located at 1685 Main St. For more information, log onto arts.smgov.net. Hollywood story through a kid’s eyes
