It’s a Buddhist weekend in Santa Monica. Santa Monica Karma Kagyu Study Group has announced a series of Dharma teachings with Lama Gyurme Chotso.

A teaching on the topic of “Women in the Dharma” will take place Friday, Aug. 25 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The class will consider the questions: Can women become enlightened? What great women teachers have there been in the history of Tibetan Buddhism? How can modern women connect to true practice and make it their own, and how can men relate to a practice that asks them to develop their compassionate energies? The fee is a suggested $5 donation.

Instructions on Shamatha “Shinay,” through Tibetan Buddhist meditation and practice with individual guidance, will take place Saturday, Aug. 26\. There will be two day sessions: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

An explanation of Refuge Vow and Bodhisattva Vow and Guru Yoga will be held on Saturday, Aug., 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Refuge Vow and Bodhisattva Vow will be offered at the end.

The Saturday sessions are $20, or $50 for all three sessions. Instructions on cultivating compassion “Tong-Len,” through Tibetan Buddhist meditation with individual guidance, will take place Sunday, Aug. 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is a suggested $20 donation.

Lama Gyurme Chotso also will have time during Thursday, Aug. 24 and Friday, Aug. 25 to meet privately with members of the community for guidance about their Dharma practice or life challenges, and how to handle them from the Buddhist “Mahayna” perspective.

All events will be held at 1220 Second St. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. For questions, contact (310) 451-4368 or go to www.kagyu.org/kagyulineage/karma-pa/index.php.
