HEY KIDS! DID YOU KNOW THAT pizza, burritos, tacos and sushi were not authentic American foods? Even “French fries,”sorry,“American fries,”come from Belgium. Who knows what is American food? Well, when I was a kid in the Midwest we ate hamburgers, fried chicken, BBQ and apple pie! Where can you get that strange stuff now? Hooters!

WHERE: 321 Santa Monica Blvd. WHEN: Open at 11 a.m., seven days a week, to 11 p.m. on Sundays, to midnight Monday through Thursday, and until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

BEST DISHES: The fried chicken wings are good, primarily because there’s a terrific selection of dipping sauces. The burgers are good. But for me the pulled BBQ pork sandwich is the winner. It’s a big menu and there’s something for everyone.

BEST FEATURE: Take a break from sushi. Watch sports on the big screen TV’s, or sit on the quiet outside patio and watch the world go by.

WORST FEATURE: The waitresses seem a bit uncomfortable in their unnecessarily scanty clothing, and when they bend down to serve the food it can distract from any intellectual conversation. The sex-ploitation is a bit of a turnoff, but sometimes it seems like good fun.

WHAT TO DRINK: Anything you want. Try sangria for a change.

BOTTOM LINE: This is surprisingly good, traditionally American food in a convenient location. It’s also a great place to sit outside in the heart of Santa Monica for people watching.
