A free lecture series on science at Santa Monica College starts today with a talk from a distinguished geography professor.

William Selby will discuss what shapes California, what changes to expect and how science and technology help people better understand the state’s diverse geography in “California’s Evolving 21st Century Landscapes” that begins at 11:15 a.m. as do the other two lectures.

The series goes into November and takes place in the science lecture hall 145, 1900 Pico Blvd. Other lectures on the agenda are: ■ Oct. 18: “Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe,” which is about the universe’s accelerating expansion rate and the dark energy driving it, presented by a UC Berkeley astronomy professor, Dr. Alex Filippenko, fellow of the California Academy of Sciences and co-author of “The Cosmos: Astronomy in the New Millennium.” ■ Nov. 10: “Surviving on the Edge: Carnivore Ecology in Southern California,” which is about the effects of the expansion of urban growth on bobcats, coyotes and other wildlife in Southern California by Dr. Ray Sauvajot, the chief of planning, science and resource management at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Service.
