*By LETICIA ANDERSON*

As a self-proclaimed ‘outsider’ candidate, I’ve had the opportunity to attend many community forums and speak directly with the homeless, persons who are close to homelessness and the “housing denied” to enter with a fresh perspective to this issue.

There are two major problems: (1) Lack of the recognition that shelter and resources are imperative to survival. (2) The homeless being exploited through contracts awarded for short-term, Band-Aid solutions.

My solutions would include holding the current City Council of Santa Monica accountable through gaining their support to sign a pledge prior to next month’s election. The pledge will include that they will plan to work with existing resource providers, request funds from surrounding counties and correlate services, and finally, to include all types of essential correlative obligations with timeliness and evaluations, and give two alternatives if their plan fails.
