Terence Later AGE: 53 OCCUPATION: Entertainment Consultant MARITAL STATUS/CHILDREN: Single, but interviewing. YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? HOW LONG?: I am currently in the Euclid Street neighborhood, near Broadway. I am a lifelong resident of Santa Monica and counting. I was raised in northeast Dogtown, on Pearl and 10th streets. YOUR RIDE? A few, mostly classics. However, the best is carpooling in the bio-diesel. OWN OR RENT? Rent YOUR PASSION? Being kind, loving and of service to the people in my surrounding community; To see my lifelong town have its spirit returned. WHAT ARE YOU READING? “Peace Through Victory.”

The water around the santa monica pier is some of the most polluted in the state and poses a significant health risk to swimmers. How do we clean up the beach?

I am an environmentalist. My history in the environmental movement, having worked with folks like Jackson Browne, goes as far back as the “No Nukes” concerts. I am definitely for clean beaches. However, I do not support Prop V for the fact it has no senior exemption or end game after the funds needed are raised. The elderly are the foundation and history of our community, and I need to support them first with no new taxes. Put a senior exemption and an end game to Prop V and I am in.

WHAT’S A HIDDEN GEM IN OUR CITY?

Any restaurant, business or park that has a history. Oh, the tales some of these walls could tell.

Homelessness is far and away our city’s most pressing issue, according to daily press readers. What new ideas do you bring to the table? Do service providers help the down-and-out or merely attract more homeless and enable them?

I propose enforcement of the laws that exist on the books. Year-round enforcement like the “Holiday Sweep,” which the SMPD just performed in the parks, beaches and promenade; removing the criminal element from the homeless population should be a law enforcement priority. For the honestly in need homeless, starting with the veterans working with Bobby Shriver and The Veterans Administration for Domicile Accommodations. Also my position is a “hand-up,” not a “hand-out.” I believe in the old saying: “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime”.

BEATLES OR STONES?

Both. The Beatles were the songwriters, deeply connecting their thoughts and their hearts on page in harmony. The Stones are the performers and road dogs, like myself, after all these years still getting the job done and showing the energy and commitment to their people. The Stones are still the greatest rock and roll band in the world!

HOW DO YOU SPEND A DAY OFF IN SANTA MONICA?

Walk on the beach, lunch at “Chez Jay,” meeting with the longtime residents — my lifetime friends, among a plethora of other things such as supporting the local farmers’ markets, then ending the day with the perfect Santa Monica sunset from Inspiration Point.

Residents and elected officials often clash over the issue of gang violence — some advocate more enforcement, others call for more intervention and prevention strategies. Where would you focus resources?

Law enforcement, in the proper measure, with the youth. I am for intervention and prevention strategies, like less crowded schools — our children need to be taught from day one that we are one world, one people.Yes, our city is a cultural melting pot, and all cultures need to be honored, however, from pre-school on, our students and children need to be taught non-violence and peaceful resolution.

IF YOU COULD HAVE LUNCH WITH ANY THREE PEOPLE IN HISTORY, WHO WOULD THEY BE? (SPOUSE AND CHILDREN EXCLUDED): 1) Benjamin Franklin 2) Thomas Jefferson 3) Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.

Local businesses provide the majority of the city’s general fund revenues, yet santa monica has a reputation for being a difficult place to do business. How would you entice more businesses, different businesses, to open up shop?

Stop the arbitrary enforcement of zoning codes targeting small businesses. Some of these businesses have been in Santa Monica for three and four generations. Many of the residents in Santa Monica own these businesses. They should not be driven from their location by the cities “new land use vision.”

What’s the biggest threat facing the quality of life in santa monica?

The City Council’s at-odds philosophy with our law enforcement agencies. The over-development of our downtown area, beachfront and college. The Santa Monica Airport needs our attention as well.

COMFORT FOODS?

Chocolate chip cookies, Kedem grape juice, Cold Stone, Sushi at NOMA and late bites at Izzy’s Deli.

Does the city need more parking spaces, or will that just attract more drivers? What incentives should the city offer to get people out of their cars?

Parking structures on the perimeters of the city, and have accessible shuttles to and from our downtown businesses. A more sensible approach to parking for the citizens of Santa Monica, like locals-friendly parking meter technology which will limit the city’s ability to make the citizens taxable entities.

FREE FORM: WHAT’S PUTTING A BURR UNDER YOUR SADDLE?

Since I’ve begun my campaign with the issues I knew our town needed help with, I certainly have gained a lot more education on so many more needs of our community that our incumbent candidates have neglected. One incumbent is listed as an “urban planner” and places playgrounds under jet traffic, then claims the health and safety of our children are important to her. Another incumbent suggests that the answer to solve our traffic congestion is to “move the 250,000 to 300,000 workers that travel daily to Santa Monica into Santa Monica.” This kind of thinking is what has put our city in the precarious situation it is in to date. The issues of homelessness, crime and traffic are certainly burrs under my saddle.

WHY ARE YOU SO SPECIAL?

I am one of two candidates who is a lifelong resident of Santa Monica. I am not currently married or raising a family. My personal success has left me with few distractions, when elected, to work for the needs of the citizens and the community. Parents’ first priority should be to be home of support to their spouses and to deal with the needs of their children. I will work tirelessly for the solutions to return the peace to our city and quality of life to our citizens.
