Sometimes, the first act can be so spectacular that the encore will have to be something special to supersede it. Well, for whatever reason, that’s the case for Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. Sure, they are as authentic as they come; their brand of rhythm and blues is impeccable. But, where do they go from here? Their release is an ode to the old days in the highest order — which is to their credit. The only problem with this nifty release is the fact that it doesn’t really go anywhere from there. The title track, “100 Days, 100 Nights,” is spot-on ‘50s cool, as is the next track, “Nobody’s Baby.” And so on and so on. Don’t get me wrong, this release is quality, but it sounds like it was made in a time warp. Jones and her incredibly talented bunch take the genre to the extreme and should hold their heads up high for that. Yet, there is a certain feeling that it is what it is. From the sounds of it, this Brooklyn-based act is really into what they do. But alas, what they are into is certainly retro and may have a problem finding a mainstream audience. If you just want to cool-out and feel the roots of soul music, pick this release up and imagine the good old days. (Daptones Records)
