Have you really ever considered boogers, constipation or goosebumps in scientific terms?

If not, you and your children now have an opportunity to do so through an art collection on display at a Santa Monica-based gallery.

A collection of Keely’s art is on display at The Art Institute of California’s Los Angeles gallery, located on 31st Street. Line drawings and color illustrations from his published works, including the best-selling “Grossology” series are featured. The exhibit also includes rough sketches, drawings found on greeting cards, and “The Hairy Book,” which may appeal to those wondering why their armpits smell, or are curious about Abraham Lincoln’s beard.

Keely’s illustrations get children interested in science and bodily functions that adults are not always comfortable discussing. The Grossology series of books have been called “edutainment,” covering topics such as boogers, goosebumps, hiccups, constipation and warts — all explained in kid-friendly, scientifically correct terms. Grossology also was turned into a traveling museum exhibit, which was featured on CNN, the Wall Street Journal and NPR. The exhibit broke attendance records in three countries, and is currently on view at the Sci-Port Discovery Center, Shreveport, LA, and the Fresno Metropolitan Museum.

Jack Keely, an instructor in the graphic design department at the Art Institute of California, has written four books on art instruction and illustrated more than 30 published children’s books, including the best-selling Grossology series.

The show will run at the gallery from now until March. The gallery is located at 2900 31st St. The artist’s reception will be held at the institute on Thursday, Feb. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Reservation are required.
