# A wonderful Santa Monican

Santa Monica lost one of its foremost residents with the untimely passing of Charline Trier this past week. Charline lived in Santa Monica for more than half a century and as a single parent raised six children working seven days a week in a deli for years. All of her children grew up to become good citizens.

I was very fortunate to get to know Charline through working with her daughter Susan, who is on my staff at Promenade and Parking Structure Maintenance. Mother and daughter professed love for each other every day and I felt spiritually uplifted every time it was said in my presence.

Charline reveled in her daughter’s successes and showed her gentle and firm support always. Recently, Charline had Susan and another city employee held a demonstration to her senior citizens club on our sustainable, environmentally friendly practices. All were fascinated and participated.

I was very grateful to share an occasional lunch with Charline and always admired her wit and charm. When she felt passionate about an issue she was both sharp minded and could be acid tongued in her commentary when the occasion demanded it.

My memory of Charline will always be of someone who never gave in to age and whose wisdom was admired by so many.

Farewell sweet princess and cherished daughter of Santa Monica. Your life will be an example to many for years to come. You will always be missed and yet you will always be so near.
