The arraignment of a former LA/Oakland Raider who allegedly set fire to a local furniture store was continued this week to July 28.

Anthony Wayne Smith, of Marina del Rey, faces arson charges for the Feb. 13 fire that gutted Simply Sofas, located on the 2300 block of Lincoln Boulevard.

He was arrested Tuesday and posted $1,000,000 bail. Marilyn Nelson, owner of Simply Sofas, said she didn’t know until last week Smith was a suspect in the investigation. For years Smith sold personal items on consignment in her store but their relationship deteriorated in January when Smith demanded a duplicate check for some items she had sold, claiming he had misplaced the first one.

Shortly after Smith tried to cash both checks but was denied, Simply Sofas was burned down.

Smith was a standout defensive end from 1991 to 1997\. He was a first-round draft pick from the University of Arizona in 1990\. During his pro career, Smith amassed 178 tackles and 58 sacks. The team moved from Los Angeles to Oakland in 1995.
