No one likes a hypocrite. There is little that is more annoying than the old “do as I say, not as I do.” It doesn’t really matter whether the actor is our parent, a spouse or a government, claiming the moral high ground while acting contrary is always annoying.
I am a creature of habit. Most humans are. It’s what makes us predictable and why marketers have a fairly easy job. The consistent behavior of the buying public allows an experienced sales guy to have an advantage over the shopper, whether it be shoes or cars.
Two weeks ago I was wandering around the U.S. District Court looking for something interesting to watch. Occasionally there are some very good trials going on and I like to sit in and watch the excellent lawyering that happens in federal court.
We live in the land of the beautiful. Our world is a bubble of gyms, yoga studios, waxers, trainers, nutritionists, life coaches, publicists, managers and agents.
One down, 11 to go. Yup, the first month of the year is over today. And with it has gone likely millions of resolutions to lose weight, work out more, pay off credit cards and live more fully.
I joined Toastmasters International to improve my speaking skills. I’m not terribly nervous speaking in front of people, as a divorce lawyer I do it all the time in front of judges.
I spent the Christmas holiday in Mexico house sitting for a friend. It was a wonderful way to see another country and experience a culture that is similar to my own, but different enough to be interesting.
When it comes to my daily routine, I am the type of man who is early to bed and early to rise. Usually I am half comatose by 9 p.m. and out like a corpse at 10.
About a week ago I received an invitation to a protest. Seems like I’m getting more invites to protests than parties this year, what with the Occupy hordes trying to get more people involved in various events.
On Fridays I have dinner with my friends Downtown. Usually we’re either at T’s Thai or P.F. Chang’s. Occasionally I can talk them into some place different, but it better be good Italian for that to happen.
We have a wealth of great cultural events in Santa Monica, from our free summer concerts on the Santa Monica Pier to free movies at Santa Monica Place, and an endless variety of gallery openings at Bergamot Station and around town.
I’m doing something differently this year by writing about Thanksgiving the week before because I want to remind people what the day is all about — really.
