Authorities were investigating a suspicious package in Santa Monica early Friday afternoon, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department official.

The suspicious box was found on the hood of a vehicle near the intersection of California Avenue and 11th Street, sheriff's Sgt. Bob Boese said.

California Avenue was closed between 10th and 12th streets as law enforcement and emergency response agencies assessed the potential threat.

Officials from the Santa Monica police and fire departments as well as sheriff's deputies and paramedics were on scene.

No other details were available, Boese said.
