*City Council given full slate of consent items to mull over*

(Editor’s note: This story is part of an ongoing series that tracks the city’s expenditures appearing on upcoming Santa Monica City Council consent agendas. Consent agenda items are routinely passed by the City Council with little or no discussion from elected officials or the public. However, many of the items have been part of public discussion in the past.) CITY HALL People looking to use the bathroom while walking along Palisades Park will soon find some sweet relief as the City Council is expected tonight to award a construction contract for a renovated restroom at the senior center.

The contract with Union Construction is just one of five expenditures elected officials are expected to make tonight totaling just over $1.4 million for everything from attorneys fees and a Big Blue Bus customer service center to the hiring of additional city planners, according to city staff reports.

The new restroom is expected to have the biggest impact for residents given the high frequency of joggers, park users, seniors and tourists who use it on a daily basis.

Union Construction will be paid $276,000 plus a 10 percent contingency fee for the renovation of the restroom. The project includes new interior surfaces and replacing the lighting and sewer lines, which are blocked and damaged by envasive tree roots.

Due to age — the restroom was built over 50 years ago — and heavy use, the restroom has deteriorated beyond repair, according to a city staff report.

The new design will provide natural light and ventilation, reducing energy consumption. Waterless urinals and water efficient fixtures will also be installed.

Union Construction submitted the low-est bid out of the seven companies that participated.

BBB’S NEW DIGS The most expensive contract under consideration is for the construction of a customer service center and retail store for BBB that will sell Little Blue Cards, EZPasses, tokens and other merchandise related to BBB. Customers will also be able to obtain trip information, maps and personal belongings turned into the lost and found, according to a city staff report.

T.L.D. Construction, Inc. is asking for $597,000 plus a 10 percent contingency reserve for a total of $656,700.

The new BBB store will be located at 223 Broadway, which is on the Transit Mall in front of one of the busiest stops in the system. The store has been designed to increase the public’s awareness of public transit, strengthen the BBB brand and its services. The store is also a component of the new community transit services designed to entice local residents to choose public transit.

The design aims to showcase public transit and includes an aesthetically pleasing store-front with solar panels that generate power for some of the store’s lighting needs. The colors, custom sheet metal shapes and signage identify the storefront with BBB’s current brand imagery. The design was approved by the Architectural Review Board and City Hall’s division of building and safety.

Eighty percent ($525,360) of the funding will come from the Federal Transit Administration, and 20 percent ($131,340) from local funds.
