“Going Out in a Blaze of Glory: The Beautiful Legacy of Dying Stars” will be the topic of the next talk in Santa Monica College’s Fall 2006 “Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series,” a series of talks designed for lay audiences.

The lecture will be at 11:15 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, in Science Lecture Hall 145, 1900 Pico Blvd. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The speaker will be Dr. Mark Morris, professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA. Much of Morris’ research is aimed at understanding the innermost regions of the Milky Way Galaxy. He also conducts research on the critical stages of stellar evolution when red giant stars undergo the transition to planetary nebulae.

Morris says that images of dying stars made by the Hubble Telescope and the Keck Telescope in Hawaii reveal a rich variety of morphologies of the stars’ outflowing gas and dust. He will discuss the physical processes that are recognized as responsible for crafting the stars’ striking structures.

The lecture series is sponsored by the SMC Physical Science and Life Science departments and the SMC Associates, a private organization that funds speakers and special events on campus.
