Close to half a million — $466,255 — will fund the construction of a well in Santa Monica that would make the city much more self-sufficient when it comes to water.

The project also includes building a fluoridation system that will increase fluoride levels that are half of what they should be, city officials said. The Centers for Disease Control recommend fluoride levels to be at a certain level for optimal dental health, according to city staff.

Santa Monica currently receives 90 percent of its water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

The water supply currently passes through the Arcadia Water Treatment Plant before making its way into Santa Monica’s pipes, but city officials expect to build a treatment plant to be ready by 2010 which will allow Santa Monica’s water to come mainly from local resources.

Water wells that are currently shut down because of the contamination of MtBE — a chemical in gasoline that often lands in water when oil storage tanks leak — are expected to have a fluoridation system constructed and become part of the treatment plant project.

City officials said 80 percent of the city’s water will come from local ground water once the wells are completed. The rest will come from MWD.

The funding the City Council is voting on tonight will go to Pascal and Ludwig Constructors, which is constructing the first well, which bypasses the Arcadia Water Treatment Plant and goes directly into the city’s distribution system.
