DOWNTOWN — Despite a slow start during non-league games, St. Monica’s boys’ soccer team has raced out to a 5-1 record in Camino Real League play.

The latest victory came over league rival Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart during a 4-0 shutout. Senior Matthew Partyka scored two first-half goals to get the Mariners going. In the second half, Omar Valladares and Ryan Trihernawan scored a goal apiece.

The win gives St. Monica a 6-9-2 overall record. As it stands, the Mariners appear destined to earn a spot in the California Interscholastic Southern Section playoffs, which begin in two weeks.

Next for the Mariners is a home league game against Gardena Serra today at Airport Park. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Samohi remains No. 2 in poll

Santa Monica High School’s boys’ soccer team retained its No. 2 CIF-SS Division 4 ranking in the latest poll released this week.

The Vikings are 14-2-2 this season. Their 5-0 Ocean League record is good for first place. Next for Samohi is a road league game against rival Beverly Hills. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
