LA PUENTE — Playing in a hostile road environment, the Samohi boys’ soccer team won a thrilling CIF-SS Division 4 second-round playoff game in the penalty against La Puente on Wednesday.

Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the Vikings matched La Puente 4-4 in penalty kicks forcing a do-or-die sixth penalty kick that was put in the net by Trevor Kovacs.

“Clearly, we feel like we got extremely lucky today,” Samohi’s Daniel Hulbert said. “We’re just happy to advance.”

The Vikings, the No. 1 seed in the division, advance to face the winner of the Oak Hills, Godinez game. Results from that game were not available at presstime.
