CLAREMONT — The Vikings’ first visit to the CIF-Southern Section boys’ tennis final since 1966 ended in a 10-8 defeat at the hands of Palm Desert on Wednesday at the Claremont Club.

Santa Monica High School’s head coach Wilston Poon said that he was proud of his team’s effort in defeat during the Division 2 final, adding that this bodes well for the program going forward.

“I definitely give my guys an A,” Poon said. “Guys are already talking about next year. It was a good stepping stone to reappear on that scene again.”

Poon said the match could have gone either way, but his main singles player, Connor Treacy, lost to Palm Desert’s Abe Hewko, 7-6, in a tie breaker, striking a blow to Samohi’s title hopes.

While Treacy couldn’t win the game, he did single the senior out for his strong play all season. Poon said that Tracy and fellow senior Conrad McKinnon deserved credit for helping lead the team back to the final for the first time in over four decades.

“We just have to maintain that fire,” Poon said. “\[The underclassmen\] want it now. These guys are going to make a push next year.”
