Cal Fire Emphasizes Fourth of July Firework Safety as Sales Begin
Fireworks have caused over $35 million in property damage across California

California fire officials are warning residents about firework dangers as Safe and Sane firework sales begin at noon Tuesday in some jurisdictions throughout the state.

"Since 2024, fireworks have caused over $35 million in property damage across California, sparking 1,230 fires," said Chief Daniel Berlant, California State Fire Marshal. "It is your responsibility to prevent fires and injuries. Don't let your Fourth of July celebration end in flames."

Fire officials urge residents to prevent fires and injuries by checking local regulations before purchasing fireworks. Fireworks bought outside California are illegal without a license. Officials recommend enjoying professional displays instead of purchasing fireworks.

For those in areas where Safe and Sane fireworks are legal, Cal Fire recommends following these safety guidelines:

Use only State Fire Marshal approved fireworks and verify local ordinances before purchasing or using them. Always read directions and ensure an adult is present. Use fireworks only outdoors, never near dry grass or other flammable materials.

Light one firework at a time and keep a bucket of water and hose nearby. Officials recommend using a bucket of gray or reused water to submerge fireworks after use to fully extinguish them.

It is illegal to transport Safe and Sane fireworks through any city or county where they are prohibited.
