CAL FIRE Seizes Over 100,000 Pounds of Illegal Fireworks in Los Angeles County
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection seized more than 100,000 pounds of illegal fireworks last week from a Commerce operation, officials announced.
The CAL FIRE Office of the State Fire Marshal conducted the seizure following an investigation into a licensed fireworks importer and exporter accused of violating state laws and regulations governing their permit.
The operation involved collaboration between CAL FIRE, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Task Force.
"As we approach the 4th of July and a typical increase in usage of illegal fireworks, this seizure should be a reminder of our zero tolerance to illegal fireworks in California," said California State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant.
Since January, California has recorded more than $4 million in property damage from fireworks-caused fires, according to CAL FIRE data.
State law prohibits the sale, transport or use of fireworks that do not carry the "Safe and Sane" seal. It is also illegal to possess or use fireworks in communities where they are banned. Violations carry penalties of up to $50,000 in fines and one year in jail.
Illegal fireworks include sky rockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers and other devices that explode, launch into the air or move on the ground uncontrollably.
California maintains zero tolerance for illegal fireworks due to significant safety risks. The devices cause severe injuries and millions of dollars in property damage annually, officials said. Large grass crops and dry vegetation throughout the state increase the threat of devastating fires.
CAL FIRE emphasized the collaborative effort demonstrates agencies' ongoing commitment to protecting communities from fireworks hazards.
The seizure comes as California prepares for the Fourth of July holiday, when illegal fireworks use typically increases. Officials reminded residents that fireworks regulations vary by community, with some areas permitting only "Safe and Sane" varieties while others ban all fireworks.
The investigation remains ongoing.
