Visitors to Santa Monica need not read up on the city ordinance to know that smoking is illegal. A new anti-smoking campaign is expected to be rolled out in the coming months, informing visitors about the series of smoking ban related laws that have been adopted in the past several years, including the 2003 prohibition at city parks and most recently, in most outdoor areas.

Southard Communications is expected to receive a $150,000 contract to devise the campaign, the firm chosen because of its background in social-marketing.

“They proposed a research-based approach to effectively target diverse audiences,” according to a city staff report.

In addition to beaches and parks, smoking is outlawed within 20 feet of any door or window of a building that is open to the public. Smoking is also banned at the Third Street Promenade, waiting areas, the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market and in most areas of the Santa Monica Pier.
