This past Father’s Day, some chose to celebrate dad with more than a tie. Five celebrity volunteers gave a performance entitled “The Good, the DAD, and the Ugly” on Father’s Day Eve at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Santa Monica. Proceeds from the performance went to benefit the Ocean Park Community Center’s (OPCC) programs for homeless and low-income men, women, and children on the Westside.

The five performers, with acting and writing credits too numerous to mention them all, include: Rose Abdoo, “My Best Friend’s Wedding;” Jimmy Walsh Doyle, “Second City;” Melanie Hutsell, “Saturday Night Live;” Brett Paesel, “Six Feet Under;” Marcia Wilkie, “This Girl I Knew;” and St. Paul’s own comedy host, Susan Healy Keene. Their poignant skits and brutally honest stories describe life on life’s terms with integrity and the ability to see the humor in even the deepest pain.

“We’re celebrating our 80th anniversary this year by seeking creative ways to develop face-to-face partnerships with those most in need in our society, and OPCC’s frontline presence in the community makes that possible,” said St. Paul’s Pastor James Boline, who has been with the parish for six years.

OPCC provides emergency, transitional, and permanent housing; mental and medical health programs; food, counseling, peer support, and in-depth preparation for independent living through 11 programs at eight sites for more than 10,000 men, women, and children each year.
