Nearly two million people have participated in CicLAvia events since the nonprofit organization began transforming Los Angeles streets into temporary public parks in 2010. On Aug. 17, the group will host its 61st car-free open streets event, connecting Culver City, Mar Vista and Venice along a 6.75-mile route.

CicLAvia—Culver City meets Venice will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., welcoming participants of all ages and abilities to walk, jog, bike, skate or simply spectate along the route. The free event transforms city streets into spaces for community connection and active transportation.

"We're excited to continue our partnership with Culver City, as CicLAvia travels through Downtown Culver to Venice Beach," said Romel Pascual, CicLAvia executive director. "You will see and experience, in both Culver City and on Venice Blvd, the bike and pedestrian safety measures that have transformed the area in recent years."

The event will feature four activity hubs along the route, each serving as mandatory dismount zones and meeting points. The Arts District Hub will be located on Washington Boulevard west of McManus, while the Downtown Culver City Hub will be positioned on Culver Boulevard near the Culver Hotel. The Mar Vista Hub will sit on Venice Boulevard west of Beethoven, and the Venice Beach Hub will occupy Windward Circle.

Each hub will offer family-friendly activities, restrooms, free water refilling stations, basic bike repair services, bike parking and first aid. Free pedicab rides will be available at information booths at each location. An additional pit stop on Washington Place east of McLaughlin Avenue will provide water, restrooms and bike repair services.

The route will showcase the distinct character of each neighborhood. Culver City, often called the "Heart of Screenland" due to its entertainment industry history, now features a vibrant dining and nightlife scene with galleries, playhouses and the historic Culver Hotel. Mar Vista, designated as an official Los Angeles neighborhood in 2006, is known for its walkability and family-friendly atmosphere. Venice offers its bohemian boardwalk with street performers, colorful murals, Muscle Beach and the trendy Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

CicLAvia allows only people-powered vehicles on its routes. Traditional bicycles, rollerskates, rollerblades, scooters, skateboards, unicycles and tricycles are all permitted, as are motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters for participants with disabilities.

E-bike regulations are more specific. Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes with top speeds around 20 mph are allowed. Class 2 e-bikes with throttles and Class 3 faster e-bikes are permitted only when powered off and the rider is pedaling. Electric scooters, hoverboards, electric skateboards, Segways and motorcycles are prohibited.

"A general rule of thumb for any vehicle is that if it is primarily powered by a person, it's allowed at CicLAvia," according to event guidelines. "If it is solely powered by a motor, it's not."

The event encourages participants to explore local businesses and cultural attractions along the route while promoting environmental sustainability and healthier lifestyles. Over its 15-year history, CicLAvia has helped communities reimagine transportation options and strengthen neighborhood connections across Los Angeles County.

Inspired by Bogotá's weekly ciclovía, CicLAvia has temporarily closed streets in neighborhoods including Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Hollywood, Little Tokyo, North Hollywood, South LA, Watts and West Hollywood. Participants have traveled together along more than 342 miles of streets through these events.

The 2025 CicLAvia season will continue with additional events: CicLAvia—Historic South Central meets Watts on Sept. 14, CicLAvia—Heart of LA on Oct. 12, and CicLAvia—Melrose Ave on Nov. 23.

As a nonprofit organization, CicLAvia relies on public support to continue providing free community events. Participants can join the Aug. 17 event at any point along the route and are encouraged to use public transportation or other car-free methods to reach the area.
