A new universally accessible playground at Santa Monica State Beach is in the early planning stages, City Hall announced last week.

The park, planned for the 2900 block of Bernard Way, will be accessible by all children, regardless of their abilities, city officials said.

The community design process will kick off with a Design Open House on July 30, at 10 a.m. in the east wing of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. At this first blank-slate meeting, the project team led by Katherine Spitz Associates will explore the concept of universal accessibility and the opportunities it presents. The public is encouraged to come to learn about the project and share input that will help shape the new playground.

“We are thrilled to kick off the universally accessible playground project,” said Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom. “This playground creates an amazing space for kids of all abilities to connect with each other and play. Locating Santa Monica’s playground at the beach has the added bonus of giving kids with a disability an opportunity to more fully enjoy the beach. Any time we’re able to make Santa Monica State Beach more accessible, it’s a win for us all.”

The community is also encouraged to participate in the project through the e-workshop located online at facebook.com/smbuap.
