The City of Santa Monica will host its quarterly recycling event Saturday, offering residents a free opportunity to dispose of hard-to-recycle items while keeping bulky waste and electronic materials out of landfills.
The drive-through event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Yards facility, located at 2500 Michigan Avenue. Residents should use the second gate entrance on Michigan Avenue to access the drop-off area.
The event is exclusively for Santa Monica residents, who must provide proof of residency upon arrival. Acceptable documentation includes a driver's license or identification card with a Santa Monica address, a utility bill from the past two months, or current vehicle registration showing a local address.
Participants will remain in their vehicles while city staff and volunteers unload accepted items from trunks and back seats. No pre-registration or appointment is required for the free community service.
The city will accept up to five banker-size boxes of personal documents per household for secure on-site shredding, with all shredded paper subsequently recycled. Electronic waste collection includes mobile phones, laptops, tablets, DVD and VHS players, radios, stereo equipment, printers, televisions, computer monitors of all types, and household batteries of all sizes.
Clean, dry mattresses and box springs are also accepted for recycling.
Several items are prohibited from the event. Kitchen appliances such as microwaves, blenders, coffee makers and bread makers will not be accepted. Large appliances including washing machines, refrigerators and mini-fridges are also excluded.
Printer ink and toner cartridges cannot be dropped off independently, though residents should remove them from printers before disposal. Hazardous materials including paint, chemicals, pesticides and motor oil require separate disposal through the city's hazardous waste collection service.
Residents are advised to keep batteries in separate containers and ensure mattresses and box springs are dry and clean for safe handling.
The quarterly recycling event is part of Santa Monica's Resource Recovery & Recycling program, designed to provide convenient disposal services while promoting environmental responsibility. The program helps divert electronic waste and bulky items from landfills through proper recycling channels.
