The City of Santa Monica and Sustainable Works will host a free Sustainable Landscape Expo featuring giveaways, refreshments and educational resources for environmentally conscious gardeners.
The Sept. 13 event will showcase a new demonstration garden located next to the Miles Memorial Playhouse at Christine Emerson Reed Park. The garden serves as a model for implementing low-water systems for pollinator-friendly plantings and edible crops.
Attendees can learn about Santa Monica's landscape rebate programs, which help residents save water and money through sustainable gardening practices. Professional landscape architects will be available to answer questions about design and firescaping techniques.
The expo will feature educational sessions on adding trees to landscapes and proper tree care. Visitors can tour the new Reed Park garden and explore seasonal vegetable seeds and demonstration plantings.
Irrigation and supply vendors will provide information about water-efficient systems and equipment. The event will also include a presentation on proper waste sorting using green, blue and black bins, with free kitchen pails provided to participants.
Rainwater harvesting will be another focus, with demonstrations on setting up and maintaining rain barrels to conserve water and reduce utility bills.
The free event runs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at Christine Emerson Reed Park, 1133 7th St. Registration is required at https://events.humanitix.com/sustainable-landscape-expo.
The expo represents Santa Monica's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and water conservation. The demonstration garden and educational programming aim to help residents implement eco-friendly landscaping practices in their own yards.
Participants will have opportunities to connect with local experts and vendors specializing in sustainable gardening solutions. The event combines practical education with hands-on demonstrations to support the city's environmental goals.
