The City of Santa Monica is providing advanced information on the roundabout to be constructed at the intersection of 26th Street and Washington Avenue so that drivers will be familiar with how to use it. The roundabout will allow pedestrians to cross the street more easily without substantially changing neighborhood traffic patterns. A new Web site allows Internet users to see how the roundabout will work.

The Web site can be found at http://roundabout.santa-monica.org The highlight of the roundabout site is the ability of viewers to “drive the roundabout.” Viewers not only read the rules of the road for this increasingly popular type of traffic measure but watch animated cars, large vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians approach the intersection, enter the roundabout and continue on their cyberspace journey.

Information on the Web site also includes: • Links to current construction updates • Project contact information • Maps Seen in more and more American communities, the roundabout is a circular intersection where vehicles entering the intersection yield to vehicles already in the intersection, keeping traffic from locking up and allowing free flow of movement. A landscaped island in the center of the intersection at the Santa Monica locale, landscaping at the corners and small medians at the intersection’s approaches, will add green space to the area.

The roundabout is part of a $4.7 million pedestrian improvement project which includes enhancements to Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard, Broadway, Ocean Park Boulevard and 26th Street. Construction for the entire project is scheduled for completion by summer.
