Civil rights and community groups have sued Los Angeles over federal grant money it's receiving to counter violent extremism.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups filed the lawsuit against the city on Thursday, saying it hasn't fully answered public-records requests for how money will be used from the federal Countering Violent Extremism program.

The controversial program began in 2011 under the Obama administration.

City Attorney Mike Feuer declined to comment about the lawsuit at a news conference.

The groups that filed the lawsuit say the need for information is more imperative under the Trump administration, saying it "has unleashed a number of Islamophobic policies."

Los Angeles is set to receive a $425,000 grant from the program.
