The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Morley Builders, the Santa Monica Police Officers Association and the Santa Monica Fire Department assisted in the recovery of local businesses damaged by civil unrest.

The Santa Monica-based general contractor spearheaded the clean-up effort with a team of six carpenters removing the protective plywood and transporting the materials to storage facilities. The free board take-down and transportation took place Thursday, June 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There were over a dozen businesses whose storefront plywood coverings were removed by Morley Builders.

More than 250 businesses in the City suffered an estimated $11.5 million in exterior damage alone, according to the City. In an extraordinary show of community spirit, City leaders were joined by hundreds of people to clean city streets and sidewalks and remove graffiti.

Morley’s clean-up effort is in keeping with the goals of The Human Relations Council of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Named after long-time HRC Santa Monica board member and former Morley Builders CEO Mark J. Benjamin, the award recognizes those individuals who volunteer their time to take actions that make a difference.
