Santa Monica College's Emeritus Concert Band will join forces with Santa Ana College's Concert Band for a free performance titled "The Impression That I Get" on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m.
The concert will take place at The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center, located at 1310 11th Street at Santa Monica Boulevard. Ample free parking will be available, with seating on a first-arrival basis.
Under the direction of conductor Yosuke Miyoshi, the SMC Emeritus Concert Band will combine with Santa Ana College's Concert Band, led by Adam Gerling, to present works by French Impressionist composers including Debussy, Ravel and Boulanger.
"I am excited to share all the hard work the Emeritus Concert Band has done to perform this beautiful concert of French Impressionist music," Miyoshi said. "The band will be featuring music by Impressionist composers Debussy, Ravel, and Boulanger, with some fun twists to their music."
The program will also include a ska music medley as a playful nod to the concert's title and conclude with "March Blue Spring," a march by Masafumi Suzuki. Featured soloists will include Nick Diakatos and Howard Crawford on saxophone.
SMC's Emeritus Concert Band comprises musicians of various ages, with their diverse musical and life experiences creating an inspiring collaborative environment. The group welcomes new members and has provided free concerts since 1979.
The 60-member band is part of Santa Monica College's Emeritus program, established in 1975 to offer free classes and programs to older adults.
