College students will get a lesson in social services in Santa Monica. The Westside Social Work Intern Consortium is hosting its third annual Big Blue Bus tour of Santa Monica-Westside social services for first and second year Master of Social Work students on Monday, Oct. 20.

Sponsored by the USC School of Social Work, UCLA Department of Social Welfare, the City of Santa Monica and other local agencies, the tour exposes students to the local social service organizations and helps students think critically about what roles they can play in strengthening community assets and resources.

The day begins at 8 a.m. with a welcome at Santa Monica City Hall in the City Council Chambers. Students will leave on a specially designated Big Blue Bus to walk through, drive by or stop in front of 35 human service agencies in Santa Monica and on the Westside. Representatives from various social service agencies like the Ocean Park Community Center and the Saint John’s Child and Family Development Center will share detailed information about their agencies with the students. The students will stop for a lunch catered by Step Up On Second’s Fresh Start program, which builds the vocational skills of its mentally ill and homeless participants.

The Big Blue Bus Tour is a learning tool that provides students an opportunity to learn about both the challenges as well as the strengths of the Westside community. All participants received a guide to Santa Monica-Westside resources and the City of Santa Monica Family Guide. The Family Guide is available on the City of Santa Monica Web site at www.santa-monica.org.

Attending this year will be several commissioners from the City of Santa Monica’s Social Services Commission.
